Over the past few decades there have been many exceptional advocates for gay and human rights/equality and Ellen Degeneres definitely comes to mind as one of these exceptional people. Ellen’s very public process of coming out undoubtedly paved the way for other LGBTQ individuals to embrace self-acceptance and be courageous in vocalizing their desire for peace and equality. This video is a nice reminder of how far both Ellen and society have come in terms of acceptance/being accepted however it’s also a painful reminder of how much adversity and hate she and the LGBTQ community faced as little as a decade ago. Ellen’s mom says it best: “she’s so good that she shouldn’t have all this directed at her.” It’s true. Nobody deserves hate and violence directed at them for any reason, especially not for who they love, and I can only hope that the world will continue to follow the lead of people like Ellen and encourage love, peace, and acceptance among all human beings.
